What makes “universal” vapour degreasing equipment truly universal?
The term universal has been widely used and abused in the vapour degreasing equipment market place for a number of years. Why is this the case? Well, it’s very simple – it all has to do with money and sales! As you would expect there is a premium to be paid for a product which can use multiple solvents. And, of course, forward thinking engineers like you are looking to future proof their next vapour degreasing equipment purchase. Many companies claim to have universal capabilities, but there are universal systems and then there are truly UNIVERSAL systems.
So it’s important that when you are looking for new vapour degreasing equipment, you ensure that the OEM or agent can confirm the nature and scope of their universal claims and most importantly, that these claims are written into the quotation. Remember the quotation is the legal document, so don’t accept a supporting letter unless it specifically refers to your quotation, document number and all!
Now that we have dealt with the rough stuff, what are the differences between the universal vapour degreasing equipment claims?
The Pero “True Universal” Vapour Degreasing Equipment.
- When you purchase Pero Universal vapour degreasing equipment you get a machine which is ready in every aspect to be changed over to another solvent.
- Solvents include:

- Any surface cleaning solvent with a flashpoint over 55°C
- There are NO HARDWARE CHANGES REQUIRED!
- Temperatures and operating pressures are changed via the Siemens control panel to suit the new solvent characteristics.
- The machine is drained, dried and refilled with the new solvent.
- The Pero vapour degreasing equipment will be back in production within 1 to 3 days depending on the solvent currently used and the replacement chemistry.
- This feature is specified in any quotation from Pero for universal vapour degreasing equipment.
Universal vapour degreasing equipment: The Retrofit.
- These machines may require new valves which have different seals in order to cope with changes from chlorinated to hydrocarbon solvents. This can cost in excess of £10,000 in parts alone, plus the engineer’s time to carry out the work.
- Some sensors may require replacement.
- The machine can be out of production for 1 week or more.
- The the cost of parts and labour plus lost production is much higher than the premium charged for Pero’s true universal vapour degreasing equipment.
Universal vapour degreasing equipment: The Rebuild.
- As the name suggests the machine requires extensive stripping down and rebuilding. This is normally carried out at the OEM’s facilities.
- Most vapour degreasing equipment sold in the UK comes from two places – Germany for premium equipment and Italy for equipment derived from dry cleaning equipment.
- The costs are very high due to shipping, lost production and the rebuild costs.
- This route is usually cost prohibitive.
Universal vapour degreasing equipment: The Exchange.
- This is where the equipment has limited universal capabilities and in cases where you want to change from chlorinated to hydrocarbon solvents the vapour degreasing equipment must be replaced or exchanged.
- The OEM has you over a barrel! So long as they are cheaper than buying a competitor’s system you have little choice. Go with them or start again!
