As many readers will be aware, there has been plenty of talk and press coverage recently regarding the solvent, n-propyl bromide (NPB) and preparations which use it. As I am not a chemist, its not for me to pass comment on the technical aspects of this solvent. However, there are two interesting public documents available, which shed light on the potential and actual risks presented by this solvent. I will leave to you to draw your own conclusions.
However, when reaching that decision, why not visit our showrooms and see for yourself how efficient, emission, odour-free and safe component cleaning can be.
Don’t forget: PERO solvent vapour degreasing machines are truly universal - being equally suitable for use with chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene, hydrocarbons, modified alcohols such as DOWCLENE 1601, and NPB. (A3 products must have a flash point over 55°C).

Order win underlines latest advances in surface cleaning technology
The securing of an order for a Pero high speed vapour degreasing machine has underlined the success of a recent series of industry workshops organised by cleaning systems specialist Kumi Solutions in conjunction with Safechem and equipment manufacturer Pero.
During the events, more than 60 attendees learned how to achieve top quality surface cleaning results while complying with latest legal and environmental requirements. Seminar sessions
highlighted topics as varied as users’ and suppliers’ legal obligations, safe and sustainable cleaning methods, risk management, solvent selection and optimisation, and the latest cleaning technology developments - not only enabling customers to fulfil an EU Solvents Emissions Directive (SED) requirement of investigating the use of reduced risk solvents, wherever possible, but also learning how they can continue to employ trichloroethylene on a long term basis. Deep in the heart of Switzerland, Victorinox has been manufacturing its world-famous Victorinox quality knife at its site in Ibach since 1884. It all started with a small craft workshop founded there in the Canton of Schwyz by Karl Elsener.
For over 100 years, the Swiss Army Officer’s Knife was protected by law, and it has since become a synonym for Swiss quality and reliability. At the present time, 60,000 Swiss Army Knives and other pocket tools are produced daily, in a wide variety of models. In addition to these 60,000 household and professional knives are made. About 90% of this output is exported all over the world. Read more

Embracing Change by Simon Lott of PES magazine
Distributor Kumi Solutions’ recent relocation to a new showroom in Nuneaton has already borne fruit with sales of Pero machines up 35% on 2006. Simon Lott visited the cleaning machine supplier to discuss the recent success and the environmental issues facing the market.
Speaking at Kumi Solutions’ first open house at its new facility last April, managing director Simon Graham announced how successful the move had been. “We have already noticed the sharp increase in interest and it has frequently been the case that word of mouth has caused sales to branch and expand quickly. Our best salespeople are our own customers and key to this is that they are now able to evaluate the machines in a relaxed, informed environment. In addition, we are well equipped should customers require detailed tests or solvent analyses prior to sale. A UK sourced engineering base will soon be running from the site and having the machines running here means we can offer training before installation as it can sometimes be difficult for users of open machines to adapt. We are also preparing to offer a spares and accessories service from the facility to support our growing customer base.”

Nuneaton, UK. May 2008: Kumi Solutions Ltd. – the sole UK supplier of PERO, German-built solvent and aqueous degreasing machines - estimates that the cumulative total Carbon emissions prevented by just 6 of its UK customers using PERO equipment is set to reach an impressive 500,000Kg within the next few weeks.
Since the change in solvent emissions regulations in October 2007, Kumi Solutions has enjoyed record sales of PERO machines to UK based manufactures, including the likes of Rolls Royce, Tenable Screw, Cold Formed Products and Portsmouth based Harwin, makers of electrical inter connectors. PERO machines used by these customers – plus two others - will have prevented an amazing ½ million kilos of Carbon being emitted into the atmosphere by mid-June, according to Kumi Solutions managing director, Simon Graham.
“Collectively, these PERO users are racking up carbon savings close to 500Kg. a day,” says Mr. Graham. “That’s impressive enough,” he continues, “but by the time they have done so, they will also have saved a total of almost £700,000 in solvent costs.”

Pero degreaser help Tenable turn the screw on SED
When the solvent emissions regulations (SER) came into force on 31 October 2007, turned parts specialist Tenable Screw Co Ltd had already decided to take early measures to avoid potential fines by replacing a non-compliant Pero solvent degreasing machine with a new Pero V1 universal solvent degreaser from sole UK agent Kumi Solutions Ltd.
“This particular machine simply didn’t meet the emissions,” states Norman Runciman, facilities manager. “We have a number of Pero machines already and they perform really well, so it was a fairly natural choice to acquire the Pero V1 from Kumi Solutions Ltd as a replacement.”

VW cleans oil coolers with minimal solvent consumption
VW in Hanover, Germany has replaced ageing washing and degreasing plant with two new PERO V2-Universal vacuum solvent vapour degreasers. The PERO units allow VW to clean 1200 tonnes of aluminium oil cooler components a year using just 358kg of solvent – the equivalent of only one gram of solvent per basket of parts! PERO systems and solutions are distributed exclusively in the UK by Kumi Solutions Ltd of Kenilworth.
“We simply had to do something”, declares Reinhard Ludwig, a key figure in oil cooler planning at the VW factory in Hanover. “Our old unit had become notorious for its ever increasing maintenance, repair costs and high consumption of neutral detergent.”

Not a company to be intimidated by new legislation, Harwin Plc. is an example of how doing the right thing environmentally – by investing in a Pero V0 Universal solvent degreasing machine - can have a very positive effect on the bottom-line.
Emily Gower is an R&D Engineer at electrical and electronic interconnect solutions provider Harwin Plc., where she played a key role in the installation, and commissioning of the company’s new Pero V0 Universal solvent degreasing machine; an investment that she is keen to discuss, not just because of the impending change in solvent emissions regulations (SER) due to come into force in October of this year, but also because of the cost savings implications for Harwin.
